THE WRITER’S LOUNGE PRESENTS:
MARILYN “SLYCE” BROWN
AUTHOR ~ PUBLISHER ~ HOST
F. Kenneth/W.L.: Welcome to The Writer’s Lounge! I’m really glad you’re here, and I again, I thank you for the recent interview you did with me in the Interrogation Room. So, tell us a little about yourself; where you grew up, kids? etc…
Marilyn Brown: Thank you. I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. I have three daughters. I’m married and I work as Intake Director at a men’s assistant living house. My greatest joy to date is I’m getting ready to be a G-mama.
F. Kenneth/W.L: Congrats G-mama-to-be! You never know what blessings will come your way when you least expect it. Ok, so how did you begin writing? How long have you been writing?
Marilyn Brown: I’ve always enjoyed writing as a young child—I used it to tame my vivid imagination. I had also suffered from the disease of Addiction for more than 20 years. One day my husband said, “What do you want to do with your life?” I said write a book, and he replied, “Then do it, because this shit has gotta stop.” The following week when he got paid, he brought me a computer—writing saved my life. I’ve been clean for almost 9 years now.
F. Kenneth/W.L: Wow, that’s amazing, and a true blessing. So this has been a lifelong dream and journey!? Ok, we know each other from your Facebook group, ‘SLYCE THE BOOK CLUB’—How did you come up with the idea for the group? What made you want to do it?
Marilyn Brown: As a new author, I knew nothing about the ‘Lit-Game’. I started ‘SLYCE THE BOOK CLUB’ to promote my material and network with other authors who may not be familiar with the ‘Lit-Game’ as well.
F. Kenneth/W.L: That’s probably the biggest thing I’ve learned since becoming a self-published author—how important it is to network. It opens so many doors, and you have the opportunity to meet so many interesting people. So what would you say is your favorite style(s) or genre(s) to write in?
Marilyn Brown: My genre is Urban-Erotica tales which are Faith-based. They say write what you know. I know the Lord, I know the streets, and I know sex.
F. Kenneth/W.L: Ok, I hear you! That’s a very unique combo. It’s always good to go with you know. I also like trying something new occasionally. Alright, now tell me; how do you prepare to write? I mean, what do you do to get in your “zone”?
Marilyn Brown: Well, I usually put on some ol’ school and just mellow out and let it flow.
F. Kenneth/W.L: I love ol’ school, especially Motown. I’m real big on almost anything acoustic also—it just has a real soothing, nostalgic vibe and sound to it. Ok, so tell us about your book, “Dream Killers”. That’s a pretty interesting title, how did that come about?
Marilyn Brown: I wrote “Dream Killers” when I was incarcerated. I wrote it for my youngest daughter who was just getting ready to start dating. I wanted her to be reminded to always be true to herself and God first.
The book is about two young people who fall in love and realize after a few trials and tribulations that they needed to keep God first in order to fight the “Dream Killers” in their life.
F. Kenneth/W.L: I like that. The fact that you dedicated that to your daughter as a powerful message that will stay with her the rest of her life—and anyone that reads the book. We need more of that type guidance and awareness being given and shared to our younger generations nowadays.
Alright, so where can we find “Dream Killers”? Where is it available?
Marilyn Brown: “Dream Killers” will be released December 2014 on Amazon as eBook for $4.99.
F. Kenneth/W.L: Right in time for Christmas! Lol! I will definitely be looking for it. I want to thank Marilyn ‘Slyce’ Brown for joining us this afternoon, and helping my kick off the Grand Re-Opening of The Writer’s Lounge! It’s truly been a pleasure! Thank you.
Marilyn Brown: Thank you also, I appreciate it!
F. Kenneth/W.L: Ok, stay tuned next week to see who will visit The Writer’s Lounge next!
